27 January – Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On 27 January 1945, Soviet troops liberated the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkirkenau. In 2005, the day was adopted by the UN General Assembly to preserve the memory of the Jews murdered during World War II.
“Today we pay tribute to the millions of Jewish victims of the criminal ideology of the German Reich. We must do everything in our power to prevent a repetition of the genocidal acts committed by the Nazi regime. The Pan-European Memorial to the Victims of Totalitarianism, which we are seeking to establish, aims to commemorate the victims of totalitarian regimes.”, says Platform Chairman Dr. Marek Mutor, who is taking part in the ceremonies taking place in Auschwitz-Birkenau. The Platform’s member organisations also commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.
