Prague, 27 September – The “Century of Martyrs” exhibition opened in Prague in collaboration with The Twentieth Century Memorial Museum. Dr. Łukasz Kamiński, Director of the National Library of the Ossolineum in Wrocław and member of the Board of Directors of the Platform (PEMC), together with Jan Kalous, Director of The Twentieth Century Memorial Museum, opened the Czech and English versions of the international exhibition “The Century of the Martyrs” at the Ambit Gallery in the Convent of Our Lady of the Snows near Jungmann Square in Prague on 26 September.
The exhibition presents the lives of 26 men and women from different European countries who dedicated their lives to the service of God, people and society. The exhibition focuses on the words of the martyrs, written or heard during their lives under the yoke of totalitarian systems, words that can undoubtedly be considered their life message, for which they were ready to give their lives. Their attitude and actions constituted a “threat” to the newly emerging non-democratic regimes. These people were inconvenient witnesses to the perversity of these regimes and were therefore systematically silenced. Recalling their fate, their lives and the testimonies they left us with helps us better understand the true meaning of values such as freedom, truth and democracy.
After Albania, Poland, Estonia, Hungary and France, the exhibition was for the first time introduced in the Czech Republic. A bilingual Czech-English catalogue was presented simultaneously with the exhibition.
The exhibition is opened from 23 September until 22 October 2022 and it is the opening programme of the 16th Mene Tekel festival.
