Anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain commemorated in Mikulov, Southern Moravia

Mikulov, Prague, 23 November – The commemoration act and the international conference “The Iron Curtain inside us” accompanied the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain event which was held on 22 November in Mikulov, Southern Bohemia.

The representatives of the Czech Ministry of Culture, regional government, the German, Polish and Austrian embassies as well as Czech memory institutions paid tribute to all victims of the Iron Curtain on the Freedom Path on the Czech-Austrian border near Mikulov. The statuary “A separation” was newly unveiled close to the Memorial to the Victims of the Iron Curtain. The Platform representative Mr Miroslav Lehký introduced in his speech the crimes of the Communism, especially the shooting of unarmed civilians as a crime against the humanity. He stressed that it is our obligation for the present and for the future to spread the truth about Communism and its victims. The complex and specific truth, even when it is not popular and sometimes people do not want to hear it.

The event was followed by the international conference in Mikulov Castle. The conference was organised by the civic association Paměť, a Platform Member organisation, under auspices of the Czech Minister of Culture, the President of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience, the governor of Southern Moravia, the mayor of the City of Brno and the bishop of the Brno diocese.
