(“Organised looking-away”) In many post-Communist countries, the old elites still rule. By Karl-Peter Schwarz.
The article summarises the presentations and the message of the conference “Legacy of Totalitarianism Today” organised by the Platform of European Memory and Conscience in Prague on 12-13 June 2014, quoting a number of its speakers. It describes worrying contemporary developments in post-Communist Europe, contrasting the hopes that once flew high for the region with the sobering current situation. The blame lies with the insufficient coming to terms with the criminal totalitarian past.
